Students are engaged in the work of building an ensemble, analyzing plays and characters, and adapting and presenting a theatrical piece(s). Specific curriculum may focus on the development of students’ understanding of theatrical performance and production and the ability to take creative risks. The program culminates in a showcase of an original work adapted from the works of Shakespeare to be performed on the Playwrights Theatre stage.

Ensemble work relies heavily on the continuous, focused attention from every student involved in the class. This includes, but is not limited to, consistent attendance for the entire program. The lasting impact of the program is largely determined by how much students put into it and build upon the lessons learned in previous sessions. Students must enroll for the entire year; enrollment in only one semester is not possible. Tuition may be paid in full, or over a payment plan. Please contact the Education office for more details.

PERFORMANCE TROUPES

Youth Troupe (grades 6 – 8) Click Here to Register

Instructor: James DeVivo

Application Deadline: Sunday, December 13, 2009

THE YOUTH TROUPE WILL NOT BE IN SESSION FOR THE SPRING 2010 CLASSES.
Please note: If class attendance numbers are not met by registration deadlines, classes will be cancelled. Don’t delay—register today!

Youth Troupe (grades 6-8) is a long-term production and performance project for students with a strong interest in creating theatre. During Troupe sessions, students will work collaboratively, under the direction of a PTNJ teaching artist to conceive, write and present an original performance piece based on a predetermined theme.
Youth Troupe is in part a training program, as students will build skills that prepare them for continued involvement in theatre. The Troupe is also a unique forum for exploring thoughts and opinions, and expressing them creatively through a structured art form. Students will work as a community of artists, who share ideas; make decisions; disagree at times; and support one another while working towards a common goal.

Being a member of Playwrights Theatre’s Youth Troupe is a process that is incredibly fun, rewarding, and requires a great deal of dedication, discipline, and energy. The ideal Troupe candidate is a young person who is enthusiastic about theatre, interested in growing as an artist, eager to learn, has a cooperative spirit, and believes that he/she has something valuable to contribute to the company.

A minimum of 6 students must be enrolled by the registration deadline in order for the class to run. Additionally, Youth Troupe must maintain a minimum enrollment of 6 students in order for the class to continue as scheduled. The process of creating an original piece of theatre with Youth Troupe greatly relies on the continuous participation of all Troupe members. Please carefully consider your family schedule prior to enrolling your child in the Troupe. Playwrights Theatre will consider a student has dropped from the class after the third absence. Refunds will not be provided in this circumstance. All withdrawals and refunds are subject to the PTNJ refund policy as outlined on the website.
