Developing the Dramatic Imagination...
Our multi-step New Play Development Program (national in scope) is designed to work closely with playwrights on the nurturing of their plays, taking promising scripts through a series of readings, workshops, and productions, with careful attention paid to the provision of talented artists and informed audiences who share in the process of growth and "discovery."
Development Phases
A complete description of our development phases can be found by clicking here.
For General Audiences
Audience participation is a key component of the development process at Playwrights Theatre, and along with developing new plays, we have been developing perceptive audiences who know how to help a writer by providing thoughtful and perceptive feedback. If you would like to be a part of that audience, see the schedule for our Mainstage Series or our Forum Reading Series. We'd love to see you there.
New Jersey Emerging Women Playwrights Project
The New Jersey Emerging Women Playwrights Project (NJEWP) is part of Playwrights Theatre’s larger ongoing effort to provide meaningful support to playwrights through an authentic development process that focuses on the specific and individual needs of the writer.
New Jersey has an abundance of talented and committed women playwrights, but there are very few opportunities for these artists to form relationships with organizations that will make a long-term commitment to developing both their work and their presence in the community.
The NJEWP will put into place a process that will identify writers, provide a long-term writer-driven development process, and provide connections for the writer to other writers, informed audiences, and the larger theatrical community, both in New Jersey and nationwide.

Our Past Seasons
We have a list of New Play Development Seasons going back to 1995-96, and more will be on the way soon. Take a look at what we've done.
Script Submission Policy
Playwrights Theatre regrets that it can no longer accept open submissions, though we do accept submissions from agents, writers with whom we have a working relationship, or through recommendations from other professionals in the field. All submissions that do fit our guidelines are only accepted electronically. For information on who can submit and submission procedures, please click here.
