Playwrights Theatre Fact Sheet
Artistic Director Board Leadership John Pietrowski Gene Ciccone, President
Profile
Playwrights Theatre is a community of writers, theatre artists and arts educators committed to the advocacy of the creative process through the writing and performance of all genres of literature. A nationally recognized supporter of new work through its professional New Play Development and Production Program, Playwrights Theatre also supports activities for professional writers that honor the oral traditions of poetry and prose through its Rose City Project. It's educational programs extend these opportunities to the broader community, encouraging creativity and process-orientation as a basic human right and activity. The New Jersey Writers Project works in schools and community-based organizations statewide and its on-site Public Classes provide a wide range of creative opportunities for young children (pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12) through adults.
During our 24 year history, Playwrights Theatre has served over 250 playwrights totaling over 270 plays. The New Jersey Writers Project teaches playwriting, poetry, prose and creative dramatics to 15,000 children annually. To date, almost 200,000 students have been served through 2200 residencies throughout the state.
We are honored that for the years 2010-2012 the New Jersey State Council on the Arts (NJSCA) designated Playwrights Theatre as a Major Arts Institution. This means that the Council considers Playwrights Theatre to be "an anchor institution that contributes vitally to the quality of life in New Jersey" (only one of five theatres so designated).
