Developing the Dramatic Imagination...
Our multi-step New Play Development Program (national in scope), takes promising scripts through a series of readings and workshop productions, with careful attention paid to the provision of talented artists and informed audiences who share in the process of growth and "discovery." The program is designed to work closely with playwrights on the nurturing of their plays and prepare them for full-fledged productions at producing theatres. Plays can enter the process at either of the first three phases, and some travel through the whole process. Audience feedback is elicited at each of the levels, and Playwrights Theatre works with each playwright to develop a work plan for each phase, with an official follow-up and evaluation of each step of the process. The phases are:
Roundtable Readings
Starting a new script on its journey to the stage, professional actors offer a first reading. Audience discussion to follow each reading.
Concert Readings
- Concert Readings bring plays to the public for the first time. Professional actors work with a professional director to present a staged "sketch" of the play. Afterward, join us to meet the playwrights and to discuss what you just saw.
Staged Readings
- Fully staged, script-in-hand performances
Mainstage Productions
- Fully-produced plays utilizing all technical elements.
