THE 2010 NEW JERSEY YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS CONTEST
PLAY SUBMISSION GUIDELINES


HOW TO ENTER YOUR SCRIPT

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES HAVE CHANGED CONSIDERABLY
Plays not submitted in adherence to the
following guidelines and formatting will be rejected

PROCESS
 

Beginning this year plays must be submitted online as an MSWord document or a PDF document. 

 

Play scripts and Podstage scripts must be in the style of the professional format example provided.

Plays may not be written by more than FIVE (5) authors who are residents of, or students in, New Jersey between the ages of 9 and 19. All authors must be within the grade range of the division being entered.

College students are not eligible.

The choice of subject and style of language is up to you. However, you are strongly urged to use discretion, as the plays may become public.

Scripts must be no longer than 20 minutes in performance time and/or no longer than 20 typed pages.

Scripts must be typed in Times Roman font, size 12, color black, one-inch margins with pages numbers.

Playwright's name should appear on the first page of the script under the title.  Name should NOT appear anywhere else in the script.  (No names in headers or footers.)

Scripts submitted to previous New Jersey Young Playwrights Contests are not eligible, except for entry in the REWRITES Division.

Filmscripts, screenplays, adaptations of other author's work are not eligible.

Critiques and contest results will not be distributed until June 2010.

DEADLINES & SUBMISSIONS

High School, Rewrites and Podstages entries must be received not later than 11:59pm on Friday, January 8, 2010.

 

Due to overwhelming interest in the festival,  the deadline for the Junior High School and Elementary School entries as been extended to Thursday, January 21 at 11:59pm.

This link will take you to a survey page, where you will fill out your required title page information.  Once you've finished that, you will be returned to this page to submit your script via email.  Do not email your script until you have finished the required title page information survey.

 

When emailing your script, please write in the subject line your last name, title of the play (all caps), and the division in which the play is being entered.  Please separate each by a dash.

Subject line example:   You name is Robert Miller, you're in 6th grade and the title of your play is BEST FRIENDS ALWAYS.  This is what the subject line of your email should look like:


Miller - BEST FRIENDS ALWAYS - Elementary Division

REWRITES DIVISION
(Grades 10-12)

This division is an opportunity for students in grades 10-12 to submit a revised version of a script submitted to a previous year’s NJ Young Playwrights Contests. One winner may be selected. Entries to the Rewrites division must adhere to the submission guidelines, plus the following:

  • Submit the original version of the script - CLEARLY MARKED "ORIGINAL"

  • Submit the revised version of the script - CLEARLY MARKED "REWRITE"

Be sure each version is clearly marked on both the file name, and the first page of the script.

 

PODSTAGES DIVISION

(Grades 10-12)

 

This division is an opportunity for students in grades 10-12 to submit a new script in the format of a radio play.  Entries to the Podstages division must adhere to all submission guidelines, plus the following:

  • Submit the written version of the script as an MS Word document or PDF document

  • IMPORTANT: The radio play script must be unique.  It cannot be a reformatted version of a play submitted in another division, or to a previous year of the NJ Young Playwrights Contest

Winners in this division will have a live radio play reading of the script, and a possible recording on the Playwrights Theatre Podstages website.
