Basic Residencies

Students discover the joy or writing, develop keen observation skills, find freedom in imagination, and see the power of their own voice.

Bring a professional artist-in-residence to your school.  Students learn with some of the best writers in New Jersey, seasoned artists who are screened by a panel of experts for both artistic quality and their ability to work well with students.

While engaged in the process, students have fun with words and language, and as their confidence increases, so does their writing ability. Students participate in imaginative activities and writing exercises; examine the works of other writers; practice feedback and revision; and share their work with one another.  Innovative, affordable and adaptable, the Basic Residency is an ideal academic and artistic enrichment program for every school.

The Basic Residency package includes:

  • A 4-day residency with a professional writer in either Playwriting, Poetry or Prose.
  • A planning meeting between teaching artist, designated Site Coordinator and participating teachers to discuss the goals and objectives of the residency.
  • An Artist Workshop for teachers with up to 25 faculty members.  Participants can earn Professional Development Credits.
  • An exit meeting between teaching artist and faculty to discuss strategies for fulfilling grant requirements (if applicable) and for continuing the process.

Structure of the Basic Residency:

  • Poetry (45 - 60 minute sessions / up to 4 classes per day)
  • Prose  (45 - 60 minute sessions / up to 4 classes per day)
  • Playwriting (80 - 120 minute sessions / up to 3 classes per day)
  • Artist must work with the same classes over the four days.
  • Each class can accommodate up to 25 students.
  • Additional days may be added to accommodate up to two more classes per residency, at an additional fee.
